The story
Centuries ago the Sage of the Six Paths defeated the most powerful demon in the ninja world, the Ten-Tailed Beast, being praised as a god by virtue of his victory. In order to protect the world from the Ten-Tails, the Sage developed an unknown technique to seal the beast within himself, allowing him to harness and control its terrifying power, and making himself the first jinchūriki. Although he had successfully sealed the Ten-Tails, its power was so great that the seal would break after the Sage's death. Aware of this, the Sage used his Banbutsu Sōzō ability to divide the Ten-Tails' chakra into nine parts, which would become known as the tailed beasts. Wishing to prevent the recreation of the Ten-Tails in the future, he would perform the Banbutsu Sōzō a second time, this time dividing up his own chakra into 9 beasts possessing several numbers of wings. These would become known as the Hanejuu.
Due to coming from the Sage of the Six Paths, each would express a portion of his overall personality and would be much more tame than their tailed counterparts. This, by no means, meant that they were any less powerful than and as a combination of these factors, were greatly sought after. An ancient clan that had followed the way of the Sage, not wishing the Hanejuu's power to be abused, sealed them away within a series of mountains that remained in their watch over time.
Centuries later they were unsealed and brought back to the land...some looking for hosts in order to live peacefully or battle along side warriors and others just to roam the land again. Their return hasn't gone without notice as numerous ninja villages began to seek them out to have their power for their own.
